Tabea Alt’s courage brings gymnastics abuse to light

The DTB announced a formal inquiry following the grave accusations of physical and mental abuse made by former gymnast Tabea Alt. These allegations sparked intense debate about the culture of high-performance sports and the safety of athletes within the system. Alt, a prominent German gymnast who retired in 2021, shocked the sports world with her revelations on social media about the abuse she endured during her career. In a post on Instagram, the 24-year-old described a toxic and systematic environment in German gymnastics:

“This is not an isolated case: eating disorders, criminal training practices, painkillers, threats, and humiliations were part of daily life. Today I recognise it as systematic physical and mental abuse,” she wrote. Alt also reflected on the challenges of speaking out publicly: “The idea of addressing these issues internally seemed safer to me, as the public often lacks the in-depth knowledge needed to make fair judgments or draw the right conclusions,” she added.
